How Reading Helps Members
In the October 1982 Ministry Magazine, we find a fascinating article entitled “Who reads Ellen White?” It summarizes a study of over 8,000 Seventh-day Adventists across North America to explore patterns in spiritual life and involvement in church. A part of this study compared those who regularly read the writings of Ellen White and those who do not. The findings reveal a consistent pattern:
On every single item that deals with personal attitudes or practices, the member who regularly studies Ellen Whites books tends to rank higher than does the member who reads them only occasionally or never. Ministry Magazine October 1982 p.12
Below is a summary of the findings for those who regularly read Ellen White's writings.
Stronger Spiritually
- Have a closer and more personal walk with Jesus
- Have greater assurance of being right with God
- Are more consistent in Bible study
- Are more consistent in intercessory prayer
- Are more consistent with family worship
Witnessing and Evangelism
- More active in personal witnessing and evangelistic outreach
- More liberal in financial support of soul-winning efforts
- More active in small groups and personal ministries
Church Involvement
- More likely to have church responsibilities
- More likely to participate in outreach programs
- More likely to help with community services
To experience church growth, it is necessary to intentionally engage members (young, old, new believers) in Bible study and the study of Ellen White's writings.
