Advantages and Benefits
The publishing ministry has a far-reaching, powerful impact. It is indispensable for a church that desires to grow. Where it is absent, the church is weakened and disadvantaged.
I. Expands the Mission
The publishing ministry is one way the gospel can reach beyond the physical and temporal limitations of people, enabling truth to penetrate places, people groups, and situations otherwise inaccessible.
Increased Reach in Evangelism
The printed page enables the message to reach individuals and locations beyond the access of the living preacher.
- Literature reaches many people who do not have the privilege of hearing the Word of God from a preacher.
- Literature is a means of reaching thousands who otherwise would never hear the truth.
- Literature can go to places where meetings cannot be held.
- Literature reaches the isolated ones.
The canvassing work, properly conducted, is missionary work of the highest order, and it is as good and successful a method as can be employed for placing before the people the important truths for this time. The importance of the work of the ministry is unmistakable; but many who are hungry for the bread of life have not the privilege of hearing the word from God’s delegated preachers. For this reason it is essential that our publications be widely circulated. Thus the message will go where the living preacher cannot go, and the attention of many will be called to the important events connected with the closing scenes of this world’s history. CM 6.1
Canvassing for our publications is an important and most profitable line of evangelistic work. Our publications can go to places where meetings cannot be held. In such places the faithful evangelistic canvasser takes the place of the living preacher. By the canvassing work the truth is presented to thousands who otherwise would never hear it. PM 280.1
Our commission is to let the light shine forth everywhere from the press. By the printed page the light reaches the isolated ones, who have no opportunity to hear the living preacher. This is most blessed missionary work. Canvassers can be the Lord’s helping hand, opening doors for the entrance of truth. PM 280.3
Weakness without publishing ministry
Countless souls are left to perish in ignorance because the message is restricted to only where a preacher can go. The “highways and byways” (Luke 14:23) are neglected.
More Rapid Dissemination
The publishing ministry accelerates the spread of truth, enabling the message to move faster and farther than personal labor alone.
- Expands the reach of the church to new places
- Literature can go where the living preacher cannot go.
Weakness without publishing ministry
- Reach is confined to the regions where a worker has the ability to travel and his time.
- Many places remain in darkness because living messengers are insufficiently few.
Attract the Attention of the People
The printed page serves as a silent messenger that awakens curiosity and draws attention where direct preaching may not be possible.
- Literature captures curiosity and reaches people where the preacher isn't invited.
- Books cannot be drawn into controversy.
- How many people are attracted to evangelistic meetings? How far does the Adventist message reach beyond an evangelistic meeting?
- Compare the reach of an evangelistic meeting without and with literature.
- How visible is the Seventh-day Adventist Church to the average home or village?
Weakness without publishing ministry
- The church is largely invisible to the public.
- The message remains hidden to those who do not attend meetings.
- There is no silent messenger to attract attention in the absence of a living preacher.
II. Opens Doors for the Gospel
The publishing ministry prepares hearts and removes barriers, making people more receptive to the gospel message.
Break Down Prejudice
A tract does not get angry or argue; it therefore allows people to process new truth at their own pace without the pressure of another person. The pressure comes from the Holy Spirit
Again, many read these papers and tracts and their combativeness is aroused, and they throw the silent messengers from them in a passion. But ideas all new to them have, although unwelcome, made their impression, and as the silent messenger bears the abuse without retaliation there is nothing to feed the anger which has been excited. Again the hand takes up the neglected paper or tract, and the eye is tracing the truthful lines, and again in passion it is thrown from them as their path is crossed. But the mind is not at rest; the abused paper is at last perused, and thus point after point of truth commences its convicting work; step by step the reformation is wrought, self dies, and the warfare and antagonism to the truth is ended. The despised paper or tract is henceforth honored as the means of converting the stubborn heart and subduing the perverse will, bringing it in subjection to Christ. Had the living preacher spoken as pointedly, these persons would have turned from him, and would not have entertained the new and strange ideas brought before them. The papers and tracts can go where the living preacher cannot go, and where if he could go he would have no access to the people, because of their prejudice against the truth. PM 397.3
I have been shown that but few have any correct idea of what the distribution of papers and tracts is doing. The missionary work, in circulating the publications upon present truth, is opening doors everywhere, and preparing minds to receive the truth, when the living preacher shall come among them. The success which attends the efforts of ministers in the field is not due alone to their efforts, but in a great degree to the influence of the reading matter which has enlightened the minds of the people and removed prejudice. Thus many are made susceptible to the influence of the truth when it is presented before them. RH December 19, 1878, par. 4
Medical Ministry Opening Wedge
The medical ministry is often described as “the right arm of the gospel” or “the opening wedge.” Health-related literature is an important component of the medical ministry. Everyone wants to be healthy, regardless of their religion or culture. A health journal is a tool to break down prejudice and open the doors to the gospel message.
When connected with other lines of gospel effort, medical missionary work is a most effective instrument by which the ground is prepared for the sowing of the seeds of truth, and the instrument also by which the harvest is reaped. Medical missionary work is the helping hand of the gospel ministry. CME 42.4
The medical missionary work is to be regarded as the pioneer work. It is to be the means of breaking down prejudice. As the right arm, it is to open doors for the gospel message. 6MR 310.2
Weakness without publishing ministry
The church meets with much harder resistance.
III. Establishes and Strengthens the Church
The publishing ministry does not merely win converts but stabilizes, organizes, and unifies the church, ensuring long-term doctrinal and structural integrity.
Gives Character to the Work
A visible publishing work demonstrates permanence, seriousness, and organization.
- It demonstrates that the work is organized and committed to the local community.
- It gives a sense of permanence.
Weakness without publishing ministry
- The work lacks the character required to attract people's attention.
Centers of Effort and Influence
Publishing institutions function as hubs that centralize, coordinate, and amplify missionary activity.
- The printshop becomes a base from which shines light and truth.
- It can become an evangelism resource center and headquarters for organizing missionary activities.
- Encourages evangelism to be a lifestyle rather than event-based.
Weakness without publishing ministry
- Scattered influence
- Disorganization
- Fragmented missionary efforts
Strengthens and Grounds the Members
Publishing ensures doctrinal unity, ongoing instruction, and spiritual stability among believers.
- Unifies new churches PM 196.2
- Common literature ensures consistent doctrine
- Journals provide a shared platform
The book work should be the means of quickly giving the sacred light of present truth to the world. The publications that come forth from our presses today are to be of such a character as to strengthen every pin and pillar of the faith that was established by the word of God and by the revelations of His Spirit.
The truth that God has given for His people in these last days should keep them firm when there come into the church those who present false theories. The truth that has stood firm against the attacks of the enemy for more than half a century must still be the confidence and comfort of God’s people. CM 3
Let there be an interest awakened in the sale of these books. Their sale is essential; for they contain timely instruction from the Lord. They should be appreciated as books that bring to the people light that is especially needed just now. Therefore these books should be widely distributed. Those who make a careful study of the instruction contained in them, and will receive it as from the Lord, will be kept from receiving many of the errors that are being introduced. Those who accept the truths contained in these books will not be led into false paths. CM 130.1

The truth that has stood firm against the attacks of the enemy for more than half a century must still be the confidence and comfort of God’s people. CM 3.2
Weakness without publishing ministry
- Isolation of believers and a feeling of disconnect
- Churches in regions with insufficient pastors sense abandonment and lack ongoing training
- Doctrinal inconsistency
- Increased susceptibility to error
- Fragmented church identity
- No efficient or practical way for leadership to share shared goals
IV. Multiplies Workers and Effectiveness
The publishing ministry not only spreads truth but multiplies the effectiveness of laborers and develops a broader base of active workers.
Develops Talents and Capabilities
Publishing provides opportunities for members to grow and actively participate in mission.
- Provides training in writing, translation, design, printing, and evangelism
- Encourages members to become contributors rather than consumers
- Talents multiply through use
Weakness without publishing ministry
- Stagnant talent
- Lack of worker development
- Limited capacity for future work
Seconds the Efforts of Workers
The printed page reinforces and extends the work of ministers, ensuring lasting and expanding influence.
- Accelerates distribution of the message
- Makes the minister's work far more effective
- Remains after the preacher leaves
Weakness without publishing ministry
- Slower spread of truth
- Influence fades quickly after the preacher leaves
V. Practical Considerations and Extensions
The publishing ministry also addresses practical challenges such as language, finances, and operational objections, further strengthening its strategic necessity.
