Backups Handbook

This page covers only the bare minimum for managing backups. For a deeper look behind the scenes, please visit Setting up Backups.

Introduction

If something goes wrong and you lose a file or mess it up, you can try recovering it. Think about when you last had what you want, and try to retrieve it in the backup system.

More information is stored in recent history than in distant history. For example:

  • For the last week, backups are stored on the schedule of every two hours.
  • For the last six weeks, one weekly backup is stored.
  • For every month, one backup is stored.

Retrieve a Backup

  • Open the file manager
  • Click on Network (on the left side of the window)
    • Then double-click on DTM-SV1
  • Double click on either
    • IDTM-Backup1
    • IDTM-Backup2

Remember, backups are stored read-only. You will have to copy and paste your data where it belongs.

Verify the Backup System

Managing backups faithfully is very important. Every few days, verify that the backup system is working properly. It could happen that the system fails. The earlier you catch it, the better. To verify, do the following:

  • Open the file manager
  • Click on Network (on the left side of the window)
    • Then double-click on DTM-SV1
  • Double click on either
    • IDTM-Backup1
    • IDTM-Backup2
  • Verify that the date of the last backup is normal.

Swapping Drives

In addition to data being stored on the internal drive of the server, backup data is stored on two drives. One remains attached to the server. The other one should be secured in a different geographical location.
