Font Resources

Many fonts support only the standard characters used in the English language. Using incomplete fonts will result in non-uniform or missing characters. The fonts below should be good choices for use in materials that will be translated into languages that use special characters.

SIL

Serif Fonts

Gentium Book Plus Gentium is a serif font designed with a focus on readability, compactness, and aesthetic appeal, making it suitable for multilingual publications and literacy work. Be sure to get the “Plus” version, as it is more complete. The Gentium Plus font has slightly thinner letters than the Gentium Book Plus font.

Charis SIL Charis SIL is a serif Unicode font family designed for readability across Latin and Cyrillic scripts, supporting thousands of languages with optimized clarity for both low and high-resolution displays. It includes over 3,900 glyphs, offers regional variations and alternate letter forms, and is ideal for long texts in diverse linguistic contexts.

Doulos SIL Doulos SIL is a serif Unicode font ideal for linguistic work. It offers advanced OpenType features and small caps.

Sans Serif Fonts

Andika Andika is a sans-serif Unicode font designed for literacy, offering clear, simple letterforms. It is especially useful in materials for people who are learning how to read.

All fonts in this section are distributed under the SIL Open Font License unless otherwise noted.

Noto Serif is intended for writing in all modern and ancient languages. It features many weights.

Sans Serif Fonts

Carlito is a simple, compact font. It prints well at small font sizes.

Fira Sans is a fairly compact font with many thicknesses.
